iPad Results and The New TV Project

Back from winter break! I came back to my science internship just in time to look over some of the results on how much iPads, looked at while wearing different color glasses, affect your melatonin levels or the hormone that helps you fall asleep. The first results were for people who wore glasses with blue lights attached; they had the greatest decrease in melatonin levels. After that, wearing no glasses and looking at an iPad had the second greatest decrease. Lastly, those who wore orange goggles had a small decrease percentage in melatonin. Looking back on the post before this, I discusses predictions about this experiment and it seems that my hypothesis was correct! Right now, the lab is testing how much wide screen TVs affect melatonin levels so I'll probably learn more about that next week. After looking over results, I helped set up for this TV experiment by labeling test tubes for the subjects' saliva. I learned that the lab also takes the subjects' blood during certain projects because blood samples are more accurate with melatonin levels than saliva samples are.

  1. Wow - neat work!

When you refer to ideas in previous posts (great idea!), please briefly restate the essence of the concept, so everything is in the same post. Or, add the title of the previous post.

  2. Rose! It is so interesting to hear you speak about your experiments and research of light and screens, especially in this day and age when all we ever think about is technology. I have actually changed the light settings on my computer to test for myself how much it affects me when I go to bed or anytime during the day for that matter. Sometimes I feel like my eyes aren't so strained when the light levels are down. Even though I think your research is interesting, it also makes me sad to think that we spend so much time with technology these days that we have to research the effects of it, particularly the negative effects. Either way, I hope you get some more great results here soon!

  3. Rose :) It was so nice to hear about your research. It really made me think every time I am using my electronic items. Like I asked you during our little meeting, I was just hoping that this experiment can somehow move forward in the direction of maybe besides dimming the light or reducing the time used there can be something else that can be done to the electronic products to help people. Because i know sometime people have to work late or brighten the screen to see clearer.
